Rethinking Old Soft Furnishings

Hi everyone, happy Thursday! It's kinda gloomy out there today, so we thought we'd show off some of our cheerful and fun re-upholstered pieces.

All of the soft furnishings that we have in the shop are vintage pieces that have been completely re-done. We love the style and quality craftsmanship that can be found in older soft furnishings.

Treasure hunting is one of our most favourite things to do, and we seek out old soft furnishings with good bones that can be given a second life! With some creativity, and a lot of skill from our upholsterer, we create these beautiful and unique pieces. The pieces have all new innards and are covered with new fabric. This ensures that they will look and feel like new while maintaining their original character and sturdy structure.

We're Nuts for Walnut!

Can you believe it's October already?! We've been busy bees here at the shop; getting ready for Christmas, stocking up on antique treasures, and as always we've been working away on a variety of custom pieces.

Lately we've had a lot of requests for pieces built in walnut. Walnut is a great choice for furniture or cabinetry because it's very durable and has an attractive grain. With proper care, walnut pieces can last many lifetimes.

This entertainment armoire is made of a birch surround with plywood walnut doors (we always always trim our plywood with real solid wood for longevity). The birch is painted a creamy white, the doors were left natural and have been treated with oil. This piece really showcases the beauty of walnut. The simple contemporary lines draw attention to the textures and colour of the natural wood doors and drawers. To keep with the linear and contemporary feel of the design, the vertical wood grain of the doors continues into the drawers.

Because of its durability, walnut is a great choice for any high-usage piece of furniture. We made this custom walnut island and gave it a dark walnut coloured stain. The perimeter of the surface has been embellished with a subtle hand-painted design.

Down below there is a slatted shelf for open storage and "hidden" drawers just underneath the top surface for place-mats and napkins. In collaboration with our customer, the legs were reproduced from an antique newel post, and were hand-turned on a lathe by our amazing woodworker. We feel this design and choice of rich wood perfectly suit the William Morris aesthetic of this Halifax kitchen. What do you think?

Kentville Kitchen

Recently, we had the pleasure of working with the young couple who own this beautiful home in Kentville N.S. The house is a charmer- built in the late 1800's, it is filled with character! We love the look and feel of older homes, but often they need some updating. In this case it was the awkward and dark 70's kitchen remodel that needed to be completely gutted. As always, henhouse was up to the challenge!

A challenge indeed! Before the reno the kitchen had very limited storage and work space, not a lot of natural light, and it had five doorways and two large windows to reckon with. Our designer Sappho worked with the family to come up with some great storage solutions, lighting and colour schemes and a flooring option that would blend in well with the history of this house.

To provide more light, flow and to modernize the space, the wall between the kitchen and dining room was removed. The custom henhouse peninsula helps to define the kitchen from the dining space and adds storage and seating. Having the microwave tucked into the lower cabinetry frees up counter space and looks clean and contemporary. The apron sink from Nova Tile and glass hutch from henhouse add touches of the past and speak to the character of the house.

To create more storage, Sappho created a tall pantry unit and placed it where the old stove once lived. A window and a doorway were closed up to accommodate the new placement of the fridge, stove, and surrounding cabinetry.

The door that you see in the before photo was covering up a cute little staircase that leads to the second floor. The doorway was opened up in order to showcase this unique historical feature. The desk space remained tucked away in this perfect little nook in front of the window.

The island was created from the family's old dining table. The henhouse team added shelves and castors and re-finished it at the shop. It's now a moveable work surface and storage area with loads of character and history.

This kitchen is a great success. It's now a fresh, family space that is functional and fits in with the 19th century home. We wish this happy Kentville family many years of joy in their beautiful home!

Hi! It's September already, can you believe it?! I sure can't.

Today we're sharing some photos sent in by one of our customers. We don't always get to see things in situ, so it's really exciting for us to receive photos! There's a really big difference between seeing a piece in the store or in the workshop and seeing it in someone's home.

This customer needed a dining table, chairs, and stools for her beautiful summer home on the Northumberland Strait.

Above is an 11ft (!) Harvest Table from our Oxford Collection. This piece was built with a cherry tabletop and a birch base that has been hand-painted and antiqued. The clean and simple lines make reference to Shaker style furniture. The ladder back chairs, from our supplier in Toronto, are a perfect match and are available through henhouse.

These stools were ordered though henhouse and work really well as seating at the island. They carry elements of Shaker style and help to tie the eating area to the kitchen workspace.

Here are some elegant swivel stools from the same supplier. They look great and they're really comfy too!

The Art of Lynn Rotin

If you've been into the shop before you've probably taken notice of some of Lynn Rotin's artwork. Having studied in France, Toronto, and here in Halifax, Lynn now pursues her passion for art from her studio in West Pennant, Nova Scotia.

Lynn's pear paintings capture the beauty that exists in everyday ordinary pears. Painted in oil on found wood, her pears give meaning and new life to something old and discarded. The contrast of the wood against the paint gives the work a warm and rustic feel which is instantly attractive to the viewer. Lynn's interest in pears is longstanding. For her "... the form is sensual, the colour subtle and they allow for endless variety and variation".

Some of Lynn's other subject matter includes flowers, bowls and text. She also creates work that leans more toward abstraction. Her oil paintings are an expression of her love of the medium. According to Lynn "lushness of colour, depth of surface and a passionate brushstroke are key elements".

Design History Lesson: Shaker Furniture

Hi everyone,

Today I'm shaking things up... ha ha... with a brief lesson in Shaker style furniture. I found this quote that really sums up the Shaker philosophy:

"Don't make something unless it is both necessary and useful; but if it is both necessary and useful, don't hesitate to make it beautiful."

Shakers are a religious sect stemming from Quakers that came to America from Manchester England in 1774. They're known for their strong beliefs in equality, life-long celibacy, and their lively worship services which earned them the name Shaking Quakers. They're also well known for their furniture.

Shaker Tilting Chair

For the Shakers, form always follows function. Simplicity and functionality are the key principles behind their designs. The chair pictured above is long and lean with strong vertical lines, but the slight curves in the back slats soften it up a bit.

This particular chair was designed with a ball-and socket mechanism attached to the back legs so that a person could lean back without damaging the chair or the floor or rug beneath it.

Here's an example of an entire Shaker room! I love the floor-to ceiling storage unit here. The simple clean lines are what make this style timeless. The ladder back chair is still popular today. The chair pictured below has been newly built by a company in Ontario and is available through henhouse.

I found another Shaker quote which I think is particularly inspiring:

"Do your work as though you had a thousand years to live and as if you were to die tomorrow".

Inspired! Antique Furniture of Quebec

I'm starting a new category for the blog called "Inspired!". I'll post regularly with images and info about things that are inspiring us hens at the moment.

Yesterday I found myself taking a look in some of the books that we have hanging around the shop. These books are a great inspiration for anyone looking to create custom pieces with that rustic old-world vibe. The images below are from the book Antique Furniture of Quebec by Michel Lessard. Here are some of the pretty things I've found, and some of the facts that I learned.

This pine carved armoire is framed with moulding, and has a sweet cutout base with a shell carving in the centre. According to the book this piece dates back to the late 18th Century. I think it it's the perfect blend of masculine shapes with more feminine details.

This piece is a stunner! Another pine armoire from late 18th Century Quebec, but this time the hand-carvings are much more detailed. The mix of geometric shapes and organic forms is beautiful. This piece has been stripped of its original paint.

Before the 70's in Quebec it was common for people to "revitalize" furniture by stripping it down to the wood and waxing and polishing it. Unfortunately the stripping methods were very hash and would destroy the wood surface and grain.

This armoire has hand-carved doors, and has been stripped on the outside. Even though the book says that stripping is bad, I kind of like the contrast between the bright red paint and the natural wood colour. What do you think?

A Cupboard for Toni

Last week I had the opportunity to help deliver one of our pieces to a customer's home. It was really fun to get to see the piece in the space that it was made for and meet the people (and in this case the cats as well!) who will live with it.

Sappho designed this pine cupboard with hand carved panels for Toni who is a lover of nature, gardening and Nova Scotian folk art. After applying two layers of green paint, Sappho hand-painted a bird on each door, and some fiddle heads on the sides of the piece. She chose a nuthatch and a warbler- two birds that are native to Nova Scotia.

Like all of our custom pieces, this was created with the customer in mind and really speaks of her personality. The hand-painted imagery tells a story about where this piece is from and who it belongs to. It also adds another level of artistry to the piece. Beautiful! I can't help but think how something like this could become a treasured family heirloom.

Here's the finished cupboard in Toni's space. Just to the right of the frame there is a wall of windows that give way to a view of Toni's stunning back garden. This piece is right at home!

Just Showing Off a Little

I'm just taking a break from unpacking and pricing some of this year's Christmas stock (I know, I know, how dare I utter the word!) to show off some gorgeous pieces we recently built. Check it out:

These two matching pieces are custom and are built of solid walnut with soft-closure drawers. They have an Asian influence with extremely clean lines. I think they really showcase the exquisite skills of our builder and designer. Stunning! They're just awaiting hardware before they can be delivered.

The customer is using them for bedroom side tables, but these pieces could easily be used as a set of dressers placed side by side, or individually in a hallway or dining area as a side table.

We're really proud of these pieces, so we think it's OK to show off a little ;). What do you think of them?

Design History Lesson: Eero Saarinen

Hello again! I hope you're all enjoying this beautiful day! The weather is amazing, I have the door wide open here at the shop, letting in all the summery smells and warmth. ahhh...

I've recently re-discovered Finnish-American archictect and designer Eero Saarinen, thanks to a charming yellow tulip chair we have in the shop! When I was in art school I took a crash course in design history and I remember taking a liking to Saarinen's futuristic, space-age looking style.

This cutie is available at the shop!

A lot of Saarinen's work is made up of smooth forms and continuous lines, so it didn't surprise me much to learn that he studied sculpture as a young student in Michigan. You can really see his consideration of form in his tulip chairs and table, as well as his Gateway Arch, a monument and observatory in St. Louis.

Nerd alert: did you know that a variation of the tulip chairs were used on the set on the original Star Trek? Check it out!

Looks like Spok has the same good taste we do!

Design History Lesson: Hans Wegner

Hello again,

I've been thinking about chairs a lot lately; they are such an integrated part of our every day lives that it's kind of easy to forget their importance! But chairs are important - we need them in order to properly take in a meal, a movie, or a conversation. Chairs are all about the human body.

Because chairs are such a big part of our lives it's important that they are functional and beautiful. One man who mastered this balance was Hans Wegner. Quoted as saying "the chair does not exist. The good chair is a task that is never completely done with", this is a man who is serious about chairs!

The Chair

Wegner was a Danish designer who started out as a cabinet-maker before attending the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts in the 1930's. From 1938-42 he worked as a furniture designer and became best known for his chairs. He is known for his love of natural materials and his understanding that furniture must be both beautiful and functional. Wegner designed more than 500 chairs, but he is best known for The Round Chair, also known as The Chair.

Y Back, or Wishbone Chair

I love Wegner's chairs, they are such classic designs, so elegant and soft, but not overly feminine. They're all about balance! I would love one for my little home office space! Do you have a favourite? Where would you put it?

Design History Lesson: The Real McCoy

Hello! I should introduce myself- my name is Alyssa and I'm happy to be the newest member of the henhouse team! I love working here; I'm learning a lot about furniture, design, home decor, and much, much more. I thought it might be interesting to share some of my newfound knowledge with all of you.

Today's lesson is the real deal, or you might say it's the real McCoy!

McCoy pottery has a history that goes back to Ohio in 1848. W. Nelson McCoy was a farmer then, and was producing a very limited amount of primitive stoneware out of his small shed during the summer months. His son James W. McCoy was born that same year, and would be the one to really establish the family's pottery business.

In 1866 James entered into the pottery business through a partership he established with the Kudlow, Williams and McCoy Pottery Co. This company was known for its assortment of stoneware and cullinary utensils. In 1899 the J.W. McCoy Pottery Co. was formed and around 1902 they began to make more artistic pottery and decorative pieces. These are the McCoy that we all recognize and love, and that are considered valuable collector's pieces.

The Floraline collection pictured above was started in 1960 as an economical solution for decorative pottery that could be sold directly to florists. They were designed with simple, classic lines in mind and in beautiful colours.

I just love the shapes and colours of these pieces, the muted green is lovely and would work well in almost any decor. Their forms are timeless, organic, classic. What do you think?

At Henhouse, its all in the details and I was constantly stopped in my tracks when we were there to admire the abundant details in New Orleans.

This finish and colours found at The Laura Plantation remind me of the work we do or have done in our shop.
Our clawfoot bathtub off of our room in the garden district. I could daydream here all day....eat your hearts out ladies!!

NEW ORLEANS - THE FLAVOUR

This is the flavour of New Orlineans; Funky, charming, a little disheveled and a lot naugty!

These Mardi Gras beads are everywhere; trees, fences, gutters... Its a great reminder that people are able to let loose here, shimmy down the street, live life to the fullest and bond because of it. These are qualities I need more of!

NEW ORLEANS - THE DECREPIT

These are some of the areas that I fell in love with. Give me anything that looks like it needs to be fixed up and loved with a weatrhered patina and I'm all over it! This building in the French Quarter reminds me of some of the finishes that we try and emulate at Henhouse. Can you see the flood line?
Lafayette Cemetery. Quite eerie to see all the mausoleums above ground and crumbling...again LOVE the decrepit patina....
These homes are typical in the vast Garden district which really is acres and acres of old homes in various states of charming disrepair.

NEW ORLEANS - THE BEAUTY

After just coming back from New Orleans, I felt I just had to share with you the inspiring beauty and integrity of this city. After harsh flooding that covered 80% of this city it was astounding for my husband and I to see how much of it has come back to life in many pockets and also how evident Katrina and the aftermath still is.
Those people who are born here and those that gravitate to this city from elsewhere have tremendous pride in their roots and it is expressed through their homes, their music, their interaction with each other. There is pride of ownership, rich diverse cultural history and artistic flavour of the people and how they express themselves in their surroundings that we found infectious. I just loved the woodwork on these homes' front porches and the brave colours they chose to reflect their personality and the personality of this city.
I love the composition of the round drum and tall reeds. This sugar drum which was used to boil cane sugar in the early 1800s has been re-purposed as a sculptural water garden.
This picture reminds me of Italy or France, not that I have ever been to either of those places, but I glean from movies!! - Sappho

Our beautiful natural bed linens from Dream Designs displayed with vintage quilts made from Indian cotton saris.
We couldn't resist these buoys made by New Brunswick artist Gael Ryan. Just the right amount of humour for your front door stoop. They sit atop one of our South Shore occasional tables.
This is what you see when you first walk in our store. We found this antique pediment and had our furniture maker build a frame under it and transformed it into a large scale mirror. It looks great atop one of our own rustic sideboards and perfect combination for a large front hallway or dining room. Don't you just love the Phrenology heads - a great conversation starter!
First glimpse of our store and you will be wowed with all of our new goodies. We love our birch dining table set up with these new chairs brought in from one of our suppliers. Why not put wicker at the head of the table, so comfortable and so effortlessly chic. What do you think of our antique wall panel as a work of art? Buddha heads, metal lanterns and rustic board coffee tables all contribute to a relaxed vibe that we so love.

Happy Easter everyone. I thought I'd share with you my own little tribute to the Easter tradition; a table centre piece to delight my two little girls. When these felted bunnies arrived at the henhouse I just had to take one home and plant him in this vintage industrial ice tray along with found bird nests, painted rocks from the Annapolis Valley Sunday Market, a little Easter grass, and tealights. Voila! I think it looks quite festive don't you think? - Sappho

A ROOM OF ONE'S OWN

This is a bedroom that has long awaited a caring and thoughtful touch. An addition was built several years ago which included this ample size master and ensuite and a large family room below. After an exhausting time renovating the couple lacked energy and time to furnish and finish these beautiful new spaces. We were more than happy to help! Henhouse was called upon to create a room that was relaxed and elegant but also friendly, eclectic and cozy. Shown here are the foundations of this room so far; a new upholstered headboard and skirt, toss cushions, benches, side tables and lamps. With the exception of the lamps all were designed and made by henhouse. Lamps from Bellissimo. Stay tuned for the final result once it has been filled in with rugs, drapery, art, soft furnishings, family photos and personal touches...

We've been quite excited with the approach of Spring just around the corner and with this in mind we had fun choosing fabrics for our ongoing efforts to upcycle fabulous finds like these two arm chairs. Inspired by Spring's new "it" colour, nautical blue, we chose this fun floral by Thom Felicia for Kravet. Both chairs have been completely overhauled and reupholstered with a cushy down wrap to sink into. We had to set it off just right with this zingy linen throw!
Soft faded greens were just the colour to touch on the Spring theme for this chair. Set off with our new vintage Indian sari quilts, it is just the thing to curl up with.

All cabinetry was inset in the traditional way. The glass we used is a reproduction "seedy" glass that mimics the little seed air bubbles found in turn-of-the-century glass.

Have you ever wondered what the steps are for building your dream Henhouse kitchen? Well we'll navigate you through the procedure where every detail is thought out and every thing has its place so your kitchen will be highly organized, efficient and designed to be unique and long lasting.

The first step is to set up a meeting with our kitchen cabinet designer, Sappho Griffin. The initial meeting is to brainstorm and get an idea of the space and requirements you have be it a renovation or a new build. The meeting can take pace in our storefront or in your home (for a nominal fee) where you can bring in magazine clippings for visual reference and measurements of your space. From there she can draw up conceptual sketches and produce an estimate to complete the job. She can work with you to just design and build the cabinetry or can assist you further with desicions in regards to counters, sink/taps, back splash selection, flooring or lighting selections...

After a deposit, the next step is to finalize details of the cabinet design and produce detailed drawings for the cabinet maker, electricians, plumbers and contractors to follow as shown above of our most recent kitchen completed in Amherst New Brunswick.

The 2" thick counter top will be installed once situated and will feature an integrated raised concrete bowl by a local Halifax company. As you can see, each drawer accommodates plumbing with ample usable and accessible storage.

Although we have not seen the house this coffee table is going into, we are led to fantasize that this hefty table is destined to hold its own in one of the many dreamy ocean side homes that dot our Nova Scotian shoreline.
Our customer chose from our many blue hued samples a layering of two distinct blues that have been rubbed back to show wear and tear that give the overall look a faded appearance. The top surface is rough pine boards that have been stained and waxed to look weather-beaten and relaxed.

WARM ACCOLADES

To say this kitchen and this house was an ugly duckling before the renovation is a vast understatement. Our good friends were very astute in their plan to buy the ugliest house on the block but on a great street on the Halifax Peninsula and then transform it back into the home it once was. Over 100 years old, this home had undergone a 1970s renovation inside and out, with all the original detailing removed. The exterior was a horror and the interior, especially the kitchen, was all smoky mirrors (yes mirrors in the kitchen!) and shag carpets and wrought iron detail.
Our friends had a clean slate once all the '70s horror was removed and their esthetic ran towards the Craftsman and Shaker styles. With a simple galley style layout we devised a palette of warmth typical of that style. Who knew we could convince them that Light Khaki on their cabinets is the new neutral? But we, and they, are so pleased with the results. Tired of cream and white on cabinets we used the soft green and went intense on the walls with a burnt orange and a very soft white on the beadboard to keep the room feeling crisp and modern.
To keep the room warm and organic in feeling, we went with birch wood countertops and cork flooring. The bib sink is from Franke available at Nova Tile and Marble. To keep their counters looking good, all that is required is a wipe down after kitchen clean up - just treat these counters as you would your dining room table and they will look as good as the day they were put in.

COZY CORNER

For this particular project we worked with a couple who live in the heart of the city where the house are old yet charming and their interior spaces cozy yet TINY! This couple needed a small spot in their kitchen to sit down and enjoy their coffee and paper. We worked with them and designed this small built in nook and chose for them upholstery fabric that was soft and interesting. The stripe on the main cushions and the quilted pattern on the toss cushions work well with their original brick hearth and are kept in the rich burnt orange tones; both are from Kravet fabrics. We also designed this petite round pedestal table in birch and gave it a rich warm cognac antique stain. We were all pleased with the results!

The island was stained a rich blend of stains on birch to give it depth and personality and coexist with the rough-hewn beams and floors. To the right of the stove features a pull out to house oils/vinegars and baking sheets, left of the stove houses all the spices and cooking utensils allowing the soapstone counter to be clutter free.

At first the lower than counter height windows posed a big problem as we could not run the counter in an L-shape for maximum prep space. However, the solution we came up with, to drop the counter to the window height, has now become a unique, interesting and functional feature - guests and kids alike love hanging out there, plus when you first walk into this kitchen your eye immediately goes to those picture windows framing their awesome view and that was the point all along!

Who wants to look at a kitchen when you've got an incredible view like this?!!! We took our cues from this breath-taking look off near Lawrencetown beach; we felt the kitchen needed to be simple, simple, simple. The focus was to highlight the gorgeous reclaimed beams and flooring and the large picture windows framing these stunning views. BUT and a big but, this kitchen had to have the same calibre of the natural beauty surrounding it and the incredible work this family had done so far in building this home from the ground up.

Every year we have people ask us how we decorate our homes for the holidays. How do we use the stuff that we sell? When we shop at the gift show each January, (yes a whole year in advance!!!) we always look for things that are unique, natural, vintage or home spun in feeling and of coarse we can't resist a bit of sparkle. This year for my home I was taken with these very large red and white yarn spool ball ornaments. We carry a couple of different sizes but the ones that are over sized- almost Dr. Suess like really struck me and made me smile and get excited. I loved their home-spun feeling and I knew they would be perfect for my extra large sized wreath that I put up every year and in my planters.

What I have been doing for last many years is fill all 5 of my window boxes with cut birch branches and spruce boughs that I go out and find in the forest near our house. I then head over to Bloom Nurseries for their unique fillers like variegated boxwood, cedar boughs, eucalyptus, dogwood, magnolia, pepper berries and many other specialty branches. This year I had in my mind that these large yarn balls needed some extra bulk and height in the planter for my back entrance, so I found fallen birch logs in my forest outing and I dragged them home and cut them to size to fit the barrel by our back door. Once all the branches are in place I string my lights through them and add the bows or red star ornaments, lastly added my new addition of the red and white yarn balls.

It looks like a lot of effort but really its just a simple formula I've been using every year for my base and then I try to add something a little unexpected or different to make it all interesting and new. I hope I can inspire you as much as I have been inspired by a simple red and white yarn ball!

This sunny round dining room happily dictated the shape of this table we built for homeowners here in Bedford, NS. Just off the kitchen, this relaxed household needed a table that was elegant yet family friendly with a mix of kids and grandkids coming and going. Able to accommodate 6-8 we designed and built this piece in pine and took finishing cues from a family heirloom close by. The antique hutch is made from mahogany, so we used the same tones and blended stains to achieve a rich warm red/brown in our table. The round braided carpet, also from henhouse layers the warmth of this room.

A big thank you to all who came out and braved the rainy elements for our Christmas holiday-decorating-kick-off this past weekend! It has been nothing but torrential downpours here in Halifax the last four days with no break in sight, BUT soggy spirits were left at the door the minute people stepped into the Henhouse. A sparkly winter wonderland with vintage inspired decorations and bold glittering accents, many Haligonians are now happily at home dreaming and anticipating the day they get to start putting all their new Henhouse purchases out on display in their own nests.

These are a couple of pieces we finished this past week, each going to their respective homes in Halifax. The colour of each one is so rich it reminded us of chocolate or even better, chocolate covered espresso beans! The grain of the wood is varied and interesting (pine on the table and birch on the dresser) and took the layers of stain deeply. This richness doesn't come with factory produced furniture and that is why we are continually dedicated and passionate about our furniture, finishes and the wonderful homes they end up in. INSPIRING HOME#2

Could a bed look any more inviting! Don't you just want to sink into this cloud of perfection!
For this lovely home we designed and had upholstered this floral headboard and bed skirt. We had the euro cushions made for a pop of colour against the cool gray walls and slate gray silk curtains. When we showed our customer a variety of fabrics from Duralee they instantly fell for this bold floral which feels so young and fresh.
Working again with our customer for their dining room in their new house, we designed and built the walnut dining table and painted birch sideboard. Their palette is crisp and fresh with a traditional twist, so we designed pieces with that and longevity in mind. Both pieces are quite different from each other yet complement each other by highlighting their best qualities. The walnut table is lightly stained to bring out the depth and grain of the wood, so rich and yummy! And we chose to paint the sideboard to highlight the different features such as the varying depths and the beaded edging around the doors/drawers. The chairs we upholstered in Kravet fabric and are ordered from our supplier in Ontario, Jamco.
Okay we didn't have anything to do with these two lovely rooms above and below but we wish we did, they are just gorgeous! Wonderful local designer Nancie Phipps from Theakston Phipps Interiors needs to take all the credit, she did a brilliant job collaborating with her client to pull together these two delightful rooms that are both comfortable yet polished.
Working with our customers in their homes and collaborating with them and sometimes their designers, we really can come together as a whole and create spaces that are fresh and modern but will also stand the test of time. Customizing is not inexpensive, so we put a lot of thought into creating furniture, built-ins and soft furnishings that will be classic yet youthful and won't tire over time. Each piece we create are built solidly enough and are ensured to be passed down and fought over by future generations.

KIDS ROOMS

Why go the expected route of pink frills and princess themes? With longevity in mind, Sappho decided to decorate her girls rooms with a more sophisticated palette and smaller touches of girliness. For Hannah, who is six, she went with black and cream toile by Waverly with touches of hot pink and orange. The bed was tucked into a nook and then custom pillows were made to resemble a daybed and reading nook. Of coarse you can never have enough stuffies!
Here you see a black painted dresser by Henhouse and a newly upholstered vintage chair. The paper patch work "quilt" is conceived and stitched by an artistic friend as a baby shower gift.
Lila's room was transformed for her third birthday this past May. Out went the crib and in went vintage twin metal beds, custom duvet covers by Les Indiennes (carried by the Henhouse), braided carpet from Henhouse, and a vintage map and paintings found and collected. The dresser was a gift from Henhouse's furniture maker when Hannah was first born.

This new custom designed hutch by Henhouse is so adorable. It's our new favorite design because it is so versatile. It would be perfect for a bathroom housing bath linens, toiletries, etc. Great for a small condo for dishes and glass ware, or for an office housing books and mementos. We decided to paint the exterior in a crisp soft white and the interior is painted a delicious shade a blue called "Raindance" from Benjamin Moore. On our floor now.
Just arrived! Tokyo Milk is back in stock! A beautiful bath and paper line out of Denver Colorado who are dedicated to a sweet smelling and stylish product line. We love their vintage imagery on their packaging, each soap and lip balm box is hand glittered for that extra special touch, special kissing messages inside each lip balm. We now carry their sweet card line too!

MASTER BEDROOM

The master bedroom carries on the global style with a vintage Indian folding screen as a focal point behind the bed. The side tables are newly made from Indonesia, the painting is from artist Trudi Smith. The bed linens are natural hemp ramie from Henhouse and the quilt is vintage.
The antique cupboard has simple vertical lines that echo the beadboard on the walls. The ocean painting was purchased at an antique auction in Pictou, NS when Sappho first moved here from Vancouver. The colours of the painting were the jumping off point for the colour scheme in their room.

DINING ROOM

This room is bathed in sunlight most of the day and with the built-in bench and a view of the Bedford Basin, it makes it the ideal spot for relaxed eating. The armoire was designed, antiqued and painted in a folk motif by Sappho a number of years ago - it holds their collection of vintage dishes. The pottery above the armoire is mostly vintage McCoy. The chairs are vintage office chairs that were reupholstered in ostrich skin vinyl which makes it great for easy clean up.
The bold Red & White sign came from Finer Things Antiques on Agricola St. and was snapped up for a bargain. The painting was a wedding present from Sappho's artistic cousins, the antique table came from Henhouse, and the light sconces are vintage.

KITCHEN

The kitchen is where Sappho and her husband did most of their changes when they first moved in in 2001. With a tight budget they decided to keep the 15 year old dated cabinetry that was still in good shape and just add a second row of uppers for needed storage. Then it was all hand painted in a soft white to unify the old and the new. They also added a floating checkerboard cork floor to cover the unsightly vinyl and the island is the very first prototype of an island for Henhouse designed by Sappho. The over sized lantern is vintage and originally came from the officer's mess hall in the Stadacona Lodge, Halifax.

The fridge surround was custom made and designed by Sappho to give a more "fitted" look with shelving for everyday dry goods. Glass jars are an everyday item at Henhouse.

OFFICE/PLAYROOM

Welcome to the playroom slash office. This was originally the formal dining room but out of necessity and lack of dinner parties since the kids were born, it has turned into a space that can be used on a day to day basis. Sappho and her husband decided to reinvent the closet in this room to an out of the way office that was designed by Sappho and brought to life by Henhouse's cabinet maker. It can all be closed up at a moments notice.
The girls have fun in this room with their toys and art work on display. They feel so proud to show off their art to anyone who drops in and it instantly gives warmth and fun to this room. Having a dedicated wall to your kids art will give them the confidence that their efforts mean something to you and they will enjoy adding to it over time. LIVING ROOM

The living room in this 1890's home is such a warm cozy room. The walls and ceilings in this house are all original beadboard which have been mostly painted white to showcase Sappho's collection of custom designed and primitive antique furniture. Her style, as she refers to it, is "collected". Her furniture, art, decor, etc. have been amassed and edited over a period of 15 years. The common thread is a folky global style that she feels most comfortable with.
To help brighten up her North facing living room, she chose light and airy linen curtains by Thom Filicia from Kravet. They have the sweetest and tiniest silhouette of seagulls, just a hint of something fun and a reminder that this home is only two blocks from the ocean. The pouf is leather from Morrocco. The chest came from Folkart Interiors. The antique glass floats, shells balls and urchin wax candles came from Henhouse.
Here you get a glimpse of the original ceiling in it's unusual design. Sappho used that same design when coming up with ideas for the South Shore kitchen she designed and featured here on our blog in the South Shore Series Part 3. INSPIRING HOMES #1

This is the front entry way of home owner Sappho Griffin's house. The Zebra print cowhide rug is a recent purchase. It will withstand the dirt from shoes and the graphic appeal is perfect against the more rough-hewn old pine floorboards and green painted antique cabinet. The painting is vintage from Quebec and a gift from mentor Dave Johnson from Folkart Interiors in Vancouver, BC.
This is the back entrance and most often used where a good amount of shoe clutter is concealed behind the vintage textile from India in lieu of closet doors, a gift from her parents' travels. The black framed mirror is custom made from Henhouse and Sappho decided to paint the colour block a rich red (her favorite colour) to define the entry hall area and to help hide dirty fingerprints.

Here at Henhouse, we receive many requests for holiday decorating tips this time of year. Our customers love to know how we decorate our homes and so with this in mind we felt, with our new blog, that this is the perfect venue for show and tell. We would like to showcase your homes that have inspired us and share our homes in hopes that they inspire you.

We will start off with co-owner Sappho Griffin's home that is shared by her husband and their two girls in old Bedford. The house is circa 1890 and has been updated slowly over the last 10 years. Last year they dedicated their efforts to the exterior by fencing in the yard, creating an estate-like feeling (and the added bonus of keeping the children safe!), added a new front porch and french doors where none existed, a pergola over a side deck for outdoor eating, new lower windows (by Norwood), all new doors (by Marvin) and a mini tree/playhouse for the kids. The green/gray colour of the body of the house and soft putty trim colour painted in '01 help it blend in with the natural surroundings. They decided to add a statement with bold black for all the doors/decking and red hot roof shingles. Here is the exterior of their home decorated for Fall and Halloween. We love how this red table turned out. The colour is original, we added the fun new castors and sanded and stained the top. This would be great for a desk or an island, you could even add a marble top for your kitchen, priced at $595.

The next photo shows a hall or sofa table with a beautiful one board top, all original paint as well as the glass cupboard above. This piece would be perfect hanging on the wall in a bathroom, table priced at $595 and glass hutch $$545.

The black coffee table is a hall table that we cut down and over painted the base. The top we just gave a good cleaning and left some of the funky paint on it for a weathered relaxed look. The two paintings below are so fun. Both are vintage, the abstract one is priced at $195 with the frame and the floral $165.

We went far a field to find this unusual asian-esque inspired floral, both chairs are in 100% linen that we found at Designer Fabrics in Toronto this past winter. The floral chair cushion has been filled generously in a down blend for that deep comfy feeling when you sit down and the natural linen chair has all new springs that will give you that little lift when you get back up for that second cup of tea. As a number of you have heard, we completed a very special project this past year near Peggy's Cove. After finishing this summer home's kitchen, four bathrooms, main floor built-ins, and stairwell we tackled the clients "Man Cave". In an outbuilding just steps away from the main house sits this charming dwelling nestled into the granite rocks. Our job was to design and build an office concealing technology as much as possible yet have it fully accessible. Once in place we were to give it the full Henhouse treatment - nothing was to look too new or too polished. No problem we said! Using the blues of the ocean as our inspiration and drawing from the gorgeous stone floors on the main level, we painted and antiqued and distressed for weeks. With us gone now the room will be filled up with comfortable chairs, folk art, gorgeous hooked mats made by our client and all the latest technology all tucked away so they can fully appreciate the bold ocean views out their windows.

We discovered these chairs from a source in Toronto this year and I have to say they are beautifully made with a soft bleached out finish. DIAMONDS IN THE ROUGH

One of our favorite things to do here at Henhouse is hunt for unique finds. We got just that chance last week when we hit the road and traveled down to the South Shore and picked up quite a few diamonds in the rough. We especially love finding dilapidated and neglected pieces, fixing them up, discovering hidden patina and letting them shine again. Pair these unique pieces with something contemporary and you really will have the design "tension" that is in all the magazines. We've spent all week sanding, hammering, nailing, stripping, and waxing these diamonds to sparkling perfection. Stay tuned for the finished results.

RECYCLING AT ITS BEST

This is the latest refinishing project to come out of the henhouse nest. A l ocal designer had his client's family piece refinished to use as a vanity in their fabulous new bathroom. The drawers were completely rebuilt to accommodate the plumbing, with nice new compartments for storage. We stripped off the original paint right down to the wood and then layered on some new colour and stain to make the finish really juicy. We then did a crackle finish to make this antique dresser look as though this was the original finish. Pretty nifty huh?! Hardware outfitted by Lee Valley.

This amazing antique wall panel comes from Eastern Europe and is oh so pretty! It is in amazing condition, with the original paint, nice patina and preserved under a beeswax finish. This panel would work in a variety of spaces around the home but we think it would work particularly yummy as headboard for a king or queen size bed. It would also work swell as a divider for a room or converted into a sliding door on a track.

Another exciting and dreamy project from the South Shore series! After being asked to create a custom floor in one of the bedrooms, once again we looked to the sea for inspiration. Drawing from previously used paint colours in the home, we designed a pattern based loosely around a compass rose and then went to town on the floor! Layer after layer of distressing, paint and glaze resulted in this breathtaking and unique floor feature, yet another stunning component to this elegant seaside home.

HOW TO DESIGN YOUR OWN HENHOUSE BED

At henhouse we specialize in custom furniture, which means we can build you practically anything! That being said, deciding on a custom piece of furniture can be SUCH AN OVERWHELMING TASK!! It is quite a challenge to imagine what you want your piece of furniture to look like, deciding on the features and function of your piece, the dimensions, the hardware...

For this purpose, we have created two standard furniture lines, the South Shore and Oxford collection. You can order directly from the catalog or use the designs and dimensions as a jumping off point for creating the ultimate custom piece of furniture. While we have provided set dimensions and features in these catalogs, they are not set in stone and we can accommodate any space or specifications. In other words, think of our designs as a blank colouring sheet that you get to fill it in.

We would like to show you what our process looks like: The first step is to select your piece of furniture. One particular customer chose the South Shore Sleigh bed (SSSB) with a low footboard and made out of solid pine. They then selected the colour and style of finish, a green hue with a heavy handed antiqued look (we also have samples in our store that you can choose from). Presto! After a few weeks of building and finishing, the end result is a one of a kind, unique and long lasting piece of furniture finished to blend in perfectly with the rest of your decor. How neat is that?!

OCEANSIDE INSPIRATION

When you live right on the ocean, chances are good that your home will somehow reflect the essence of the sea. From your colour palette to choices in decor, an ocean residing home is truly cause for inspiration. This particular home is beyond beautiful, with views of rolling waves, lush sea life and plenty of smooth gray rocks and boulders. From every location inside the home one can admire the Atlantic ocean through large windows. The interior (and exterior) decor chosen by the homeowners also radiate and reflect the seaside location. Practically every nook and cranny of this home is filled with delightful sea side treasures, like old buoys and lobster traps.

Our henhouse project was simple: to refinish a built in bar and entertainment unit, blending the piece with the house's unique and whimsical seaside decor. Originally finished in a solid blue, our goal was to conceive of and execute a custom finish which incorporated the hues of the granite rock visible outside the windows and also found in the fireplace.

In the end we opted to use three separate paint colours, creating a faux finish which emulated the hues found in drift wood. By blending and layering the colours we were able to capture the tones of driftwood and by finishing the unit in a blend of neutral colours we found that all of the colourful decor pieces, such as the the boat coffee table, really popped and were now showcased perfectly. The task was a success!

THE CHAIR PEOPLE

Selecting chairs for a table can be quite a daunting task, and an expensive one at that. Perhaps an obvious choice is to select chairs in the same finish and style as your table. However, we see chairs as an opportunity to break some design boundaries and shake things up a bit. Mixed woods and stains? Why not?! Upholstery? Great idea! The most important thing is to make sure that, like all pieces of furniture, the chair is built to last and made with quality materials.

This is why we believe Jamco to be a good fit with our own hand built dining tables. A Canadian company based out of Mississauga ON, all of their chairs are made out of solid beech frames and use mortise and tenon joinery. After designing, building and finishing the spectacular South Shore kitchen, we were eager to get to work on more exciting and creative projects in this dazzling home. Besides creating brand new pieces of furniture from scratch we also specialize in finding and refinishing antique pieces. We were more than pleased to share with the home owners our zeal for previously used furniture. This antique baking table from Eastern Europe is one of our favorite finds and ended up being the perfect height for a sofa table! The vanity is also a great example of furniture re-conceptualized for new use. Originally the homeowner's antique bureau, we breathed new life into the piece by finishing it in our signature 'henhouse' red and outfitting it with clean white porcelain features, transforming it into a truly unique and functional bathroom vanity.

THE SHOUTH SHORE SERIES (part 2)

To build a brand spanking new kitchen (one that has been custom designed no less) is no small task and requires a lot of imagination, detailed thought and mind over matter in order to interpret how everything will come together once it is all finished. Besides creating a functional and savvy space, henhouse kitchens are also unique in their custom hand finishes. This particular kitchen was destined to receive the henhouse specialty, including a fully distressed treatment after which we meticulously applied by hand layers of paint and glaze in order to achieve a truly unique and aged look.

Once our builder installs the kitchen cabinetry the rest of the team is let loose in the space and then the fun really begins! The tools come out, the sanders are in full swing and after a couple of days and some serious elbow grease, the kitchen is prepped and ready to be painted. We chose two tones of grey for this particular space to complement the colours existing right outside the kitchen windows. The romantic landscape of the Atlantic ocean, where the rough waves crash upon staggering rocks and boulders is truly an inspiring sight.

Next step: some painting, sanding and a little more painting. TADA! The kitchen is now ready to undergo the REAL transformation...

Our co-owner Sappho was browsing through her latest issue of Canadian House & Home (June issue to be exact!) and low and behold, she spied a henhouse table and a display, taken in her home no less! Sappho's home was featured in the magazine a couple years back when this photo was taken.
